On 18th September 2015, colleagues old and new joined the Mason Institute Executive Committee for an evening to celebrate the life and work of J Kenyon (Ken) Mason. As our members will know, Ken died in January 2017 at the age of 97. As well as more formal tributes through obituaries and our Motley Coat blog, we wanted to honour Ken’s spirit as a gentlemen as well as a true scholar. Colleagues gathered in the University’s beautiful Raeburn Room for Bombay Sapphire gin and jazz and to hear tales about Ken’s many contributions over the decades. Speakers included Graeme Laurie (outgoing Director of the Mason Institute), Nayha Sethi (MI Deputy Director and former JKM student), Lisa Kendall (former School of Law Director of Professional Services), Lorna Gallagher (formerly of the School of Law Research & Knowledge Exchange Office), and Professor Kenneth Boyd (Professor Emeritus of Medical & Biomedical Ethics). Professor Mason’s long-time partner, Dr Diana Buchanan, gave a vote of thanks. A video of the evening will soon be available on the Mason Institute website. Further tributes from colleagues in the medico-legal world have been published in the Medical Law Review, available here.
